This is a well-written romance with a hero, Connor, who is everything you'd expect a hero to be -- sexy, romantic, and a great lover. The heroine, Tracy, on the other hand, was so silly and aggravating! This easily could have been a 4 or 5 star read had she been different.

When the book begins, we meet Tracy. She has 4 children with her crap ex-husband. The ex is a military guy who was living a double life and finally left Tracy and their children for his other family. He's not so great about paying child support either. It's enough to make any woman long for a handsome man who chooses her. Then she finds out that Connor, her first love, whom she hasn't seen in 15 years, is back in town playing baseball for the MLB home team. She's not sure of his relationship status but if they can have another chance, she doesn't want to blow it. Unfortunately for this reader, this is where she begins to fall from my favor.

On her first date with Connor, after having been apart for 15 years, she doesn't mention her kids. I would've, but okay, whatever. On their second date, it's obvious that he's looking for more than a booty call, though they do have sex. He finally finds out that she has 4 children when he makes a surprise visit to her house and the whole crew is in attendance. I'm convinced she would have kept her children that she supposedly loves so much a secret indefinitely. What good mother would do this??? Then when he finds out, she has a family outing with him. Come on lady! Yes, you tell someone you're seeing that you have children immediately. No, you do not schedule family outings with that someone regardless of how well you use to know him. Everyone knows you don't introduce your child to a man until you are both serious. Then, there's the fact that she has past due bills, but she bought Kate Spade earrings, new kitten heel pumps and a new blouse for their first date. Actually she seems to buy a new blouse or dress for every date. If you can't pay your electric bill, you do not buy Kate Spade earrings. A cute pair from Claire's, maybe, but not Kate Spade.

At one point in the book, Tracy flies off the handle about being able to take care of herself and her children. However, she doesn't seem to make a decision that isn't authored by her friend or mom. Shoot, even the angry school counselor gives her advice that any mother should already know. Suffice it to say, I think she's simple and silly, particularly as it relates to relationships and finances. To be fair, it does seem like she's a good mom.

While I can't recommend this book, I do think the author, Katie Rose, is worth giving another shot. I enjoyed her writing style and the character interactions. I'll define ry try another book by her.

3.5 stars---THE HEAT IS ON is the fourth installment in Katie Rose’s contemporary, adult THE BOYS OF SUMMER baseball, romance series. This is New Jersey Sonics catcher Connor Jackson, and divorced mother of four/medical transcriber Tracy Coleman’s story line. THE HEAT IS ON can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. All of the previous storyline couples play secondary and supporting roles.

Told from dual third person perspectives THE HEAT IS ON is a second chance romance between Tracy and Connor. Tracy and Connor were college sweethearts but Connor’s dream of making it big in the majors found our couple going in opposite directions. Fast forward to present day wherein Tracy finds herself a divorced mother with four children under six years old, and Connor returns home to New Jersey for one final shot at the World Series and a championship ring. What ensues is a rekindling of a relationship that finds Tracy keeping secret her young family of four.

Tracy Coleman is a woman scorned whose ex husband kept a secret family on the side. While pregnant with child number four Tracy found herself a single parent with no stable support system from her children’s father. Connor Jackson is a thirty seven year old baseball player whose best days are behind him. When he is traded to the New Jersey Sonics Connor is given a chance to make the team a contender for the championship ring-think Bull Durham-an experienced catcher whose leadership is needed to bring about a winning season. But a trade to New Jersey places Connor closer to the woman he has never stopped loving-a woman whose own life moved forward without the man that she loved.

The rekindling of the relationship is a slow build to a second chance at love but our heroine keeps secrets her life at home. In this, I did have some issues with her reluctance to reveal the truth but in the end Connor is more of a hero; a man who is willing to accept everything and everyone in Tracy’s life even though Tracy’s attempts to protect her family could have come at a cost to both her relationship with Connor and hearts of her young children. The $ex scenes are seductive and provocative without the over the top erotic, graphic imagery and text.

THE HEAT IS ON is a sweet storyline with a little bit of suspense, romance, $ex and love. Tracy’s ex-husband adds some uncomfortable moments when he threatens our heroine but the resolution to this particular aspect of the story is quick to resolve and with some moments that were not quite realistic. Connor’s fellow baseball players add friendship, friendly banter and an overall feeling of familiarity and
Absolutely love this series! We are a huge Oakland A's family and the Sonics are just like them. Catchers, my favorite, are natural team leaders and Connor is the perfect guy for the Sonics. Tracy is strong and mighty as a recently divorced mother of four, her ex is a real scum bag. College sweethearts reuniting makes for a lovely second chance love story. This story appeals to every part of me baseball fan, mother, lover - just everything. If I connect to the woman the story just becomes that much better. If you enjoyed this book then go back and read the previous three, not really necessary to go in order but it helps. Looking forward to the next Sonic love story, these guys just keep getting better and sexier. What's not to love about a baseball god feeding the baby a bottle and changing diapers?
