As soon as I finished reading Belle, which I really enjoyed, I got my hands on a copy of The Promise - I had to find out more about Belle and see what her future held, particularly as The Promise is set during World War I.

Picking up almost exactly where Belle finished, The Promise continues the story of Belle's struggles upon her return to England after being kidnapped and sold into prostitution as a teenage girl, her budding career as a milliner, and her time as an ambulance driver in France during the war.

There is far more romance in The Promise than in Belle, and although the story line is in parts slightly predictable, it's still an emotional, harrowing read, and a real page-turner. Lesley Pearse is a straight forward writer which works well with this story - the pace is excellent, and her storytelling really puts the reader in the time and place the story is set.

One thing that I found a little bit disappointing after Belle, was Belle herself - in the first book she is a much stronger, determined character, and at times in The Promise I was just waiting for her to wake up and get back that fire that had carried her so successfully through the first book. However the other characters, old and new, still play a major part in the story, and there are some very moving scenes, particularly in the second half of the book.

The ending of The Promise plays out almost exactly how I suspected it always would, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a touching and emotional journey getting there.

I loved reading Belle and felt the same when reading this book although the end was easily predictable but it was what happened in the middle that I loved the most. Belle's journey was beautifully written, even better with the country it ended in.
I couldn't read this fast enough.....
I could not wait to see what happened after reading " Belle". It described the First World War in great and true detail. Kept me in suspense right to the end.
This is a 'must read' love story. I could imagine myself being in France during WW1, the story is so well written as all of Leslie Pearse's books are.
I certainly didn't want to put it down and when I went to bed I read it until the early hours of the morning.
This book kept me on the age of my seat, I just couldn't put it down.....Great factual story based in France which I could associate with the country side so well described as I am French. Was in Verdun and around the region last May and I can tell you the facts are very true and absolutely unbelivable, my Husband and I retraced my Grandfather steps during the first war and reading this book brought it all back.
This has to be one of my favourite books.... and even better that it was a 2 part story! I could not wait for this book to come out after reading Belle.
I love how Lesley Pearse weaves love and war history together to give a very descriptive account of what happened in the first world war. Not only this but she leaves you unable to put down as lust, saddness and joy keep you glued to the page.
Usually when I am reading Lesley Pearses books my parter becomes frustrated with me because I wont even realise hes talking to me!
keep up the good work Lesley, you have me hooked.
The Promise Belle 2. This series is my favourite series by Lesley Pearse. She never fails with all her books to have you riveted to the pages from the beginning. She is my favourite author especially in historic romance novels.Reading this series I now have a better understanding of the First World War which I had relations fighting in.
What a fantastic story! I am so glad I first read "Belle" so that I was familiar with all the characters. "The Promise" was a
super follow up and the story really came to life. I could picture everything so clearly. I couldn't put this story down! It makes one realise what a horrendous war World War I was and how those poor soldiers suffered. Another fantastic read from Lesley Pearse.
